| Το μάθημα εισάγει τους φοιτητές στις Μερικές Διαφορικές Εξισώσεις (ΜΔΕ). Τονίζεται η σημασία του ότι οι λύσεις τους είναι βαθμωτές ή διανυσματικές συναρτήσεις περισσοτέρων της μίας ανεξάρτητων μεταβλητών και ότι, σε αντίθεση με τις Συνήθεις Διαφορικές Εξισώσεις, αυτό έχει σημαντικές επιπτώσεις, υπό την έννοια ότι στις ΜΔΕ, εκτός από τις αναλυτικές ιδιότητες των λύσεων, εξέχοντα ρόλο παίζει η αλγεβρική δομή των εξισώσεων, η οποία συνεπάγεται και γεωμετρικές ιδιότητες των λύσεων. Τονίζεται επίσης η σύνδεση με και προέλευση από τις Φυσικές Επιστήμες και τη Γεωμετρία για πολλές από αυτές και ότι αυτό συνεπάγεται όχι μόνο ότι η εστίαση κυρίως σε συγκεκριμένους τύπους εξισώσεων προκύπτει από τα ερωτήματα που τίθενται από άλλες επιστημονικές περιοχές, αλλά και ότι αυτές υπαγορεύουν σε μεγάλο βαθμό με φυσικό τρόπο τις μεθόδους επίλυσης και μελέτης των ιδιοτήτων των διάφορων κλάσεων ΜΔΕ.

Έτσι, το μάθημα ενισχύει στους φοιτητές ιδιαίτερα τη δεξιότητα να εξετάζουν ένα πρόβλημα από περισσότερες σκοπιές και να λαμβάνουν υπόψη τους αποτελέσματα και γνώσεις από άλλες επιστημονικές περιοχές. Ειδικότερα, το μάθημα εισάγει τους φοιτητές στις κυριότερες κλάσεις ΜΔΕ, αναδεικνύει το ότι κάθε κλάση είναι συνυφασμένη με τις δικές της τεχνικές ανάλυσης, ότι οι λύσεις τους έχουν ιδιότητες χαρακτηριστικές για την κλάση στην οποία ανήκουν, και ότι αποτελέσματα που προκύπτουν για μία κλάση μπορούν να χρησιμοποιηθούν εν μέρει και για την ανάλυση μιας άλλης, υπό ουσιώδεις όμως περιορισμούς. Στην εισαγωγικό αυτό μάθημα στις ΜΔΕ εξετάζονται κατ’ αρχάς μόνο κλασικές λύσεις και η έμφαση δίνεται στη ρητή επίλυση πρότυπων εξισώσεων για κάθε κλάση και σε μια πρώτη μελέτη των χαρακτηριστικών ιδιοτήτων τους.

In this way, the course strengthens the ability of the students to examine a problem from several perspectives and to take into account knowledge and results from other scientific areas.
In particular, the course introduces the students to the main classes of PDEs, highlights the fact that each class relies on its own analysis techniques, that their solutions have properties which are characteristic for the class to which they belong, and that results which are obtained for one class can be used partly also for the analysis of equations of a different class, although under essential restrictions. In this introductory course initially only classical solutions are studied and an emphasis is given on the explicit solving of prototypical equations for each class and on a first study of their characteristic properties.

Introduction: definition of a PDE, definition of classical solutions. Classification with respect to (non) linearity. Examples of equations and systems. First order equations. Method of characteristics. Transport equation. Linear PDEs of second order. Laplace and Poisson equation, heat equation , wave equation : representation formulas of solutions and energy method.
